Klamis’s Kalevala Suite, completed a year after the second concert of his works, in 1932, expresses a completely new interpretation of the Kalevala. In typical manner it reflects the location of Finnish musical life on the Paris-Moscow-Helsinki axis, as the Swedish musicologist Bo Wallner described trends in Finnish music in the 1920s. Kalevala, Finnish national epic compiled from old Finnish ballads, lyrical songs, and incantations that were a part of Finnish oral tradition. The Kalevala was compiled by Elias Lönnrot, who published the folk material in two editions (32 cantos, 1835; enlarged into 50 cantos, 1849). A cunning witch nursed him back to health but demanded a reward for returning him home. Not content with mere gold or silver, the witch wanted what did not yet exist.

They are ancient songs and traditional poems from the areas of Karelia and Finland. The musical is adapted from the national epic poem of Finland.
